Ok, so I don't have much of a stash seeing as how I only picked up knitting again a few months ago, but I still have issues storing it. It hasn't been substantial enough to warrant a place of its own yet, but it's been growing these past few months.
So, I took the leap and bought one of those collapsible cloth cube boxes. I didn't nab a picture of it as of yet, but I think you know the kind I'm talking about. Usually you see them in furniture magazines, intermingled with other household objects in a shelf with "cubbies".
I also did something that I've been excited about for a little while.
During that whole wave of New Year's posts, I got a glimpse at some of the older posts of bloggers that I follow but haven't gotten around to perusing their older material. Among these was this post, from Pumpkin Spins, which just blew my mind.
The idea was to use QR codes to label yarn. Brilliant! However, in my head I could just imagine all those dangling tags getting twisted together or the paper ripped off and needing to be replaced, so I took it a step further.
I used note cards, as she did, but I put them on elastic bands so they would act similarly to the yarn bands that come along with store bought yarn. I'm hoping this will prevent tangles. I also got a pack of like 5 million (okay, five hundred) hole punch protector things to prevent any rippage from the tension on the edges of the hole.
I also labeled some swatches, as you can see, just tying on the tags normally.
The only problem I have with this method is that right now I can make and print all my QR codes at once, when in the future I'm likely going to be labeling one or two at a time. It feels like a waste of paper to me. Oh the things I do for tidiness!
Do you have any neat organizing tricks? It doesn't have to be limited to stash organization!

Thank you so much for the mention, I'm so happy to hear that someone found that idea interesting! I also LOVE how you amended it, I had actually been worried about the tags as well, but life took over before I had given it much thought. I'm going to link this post from the original post on my blog if you don't mind. I also had problems with wasting paper so I used paper that had already been printed on one side and if I had half a sheet left I would stick it back in the printer programming it to only print on that half. As for your growing stash, stop it before it gets out of control!!!
ReplyDeletethat's a fantastic plan for labeling yarns, particularly handspun, which i hope to have some of day.
ReplyDeleteQR codes? Cool! And here I thought cataloging my library was a neat trick.
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite organizational trick was one I got out of a book for organizing household files. Mine were always an awful mess- I'd only rarely actually file things. So the new method is to have a file for each month. So I get to Jan 2013, I pull out Jan 2012's bills and stuff, sort out the one or two things I actually need to keep (which, yes, are waiting to be filed...) and toss the rest. It's at least reduced the amount of paper lying around a lot.
But I have a zillion other tricks, most of which fall under the category of 'ways to trick myself into actually doing crap I ought to do or not do things I shouldn't'. Like unloading the dishes from the rack and putting them away when I'm waiting for the kettle to boil in the morning.
